Johnna Infanti, a meteorologist at NOAA, acknowledges the challenge of untangling El Niño's impact on New England's summertime temperatures and precipitation, which can be overshadowed by local weather patterns and long-term trends.
Infanti highlights that El Niño's effects are generally stronger in winter across the U.S., potentially leading to milder winters in New England with above-normal precipitation along the coast. However, Vermont's inland location makes it difficult to predict precipitation patterns. Despite these projections, NOAA's forecasters emphasize the limitations of seasonal forecasts, noting that much of the variability in temperature and precipitation remains unpredictable.
Vermont Emergency Management officials are closely monitoring local impacts, preparing for potential emergencies. Eric Forand, the director, emphasizes the need for Vermonters to be ready for all hazards, including floods, wildfires, and snow events. With the state's history of summer flooding, Forand advises having a to-go bag, escape route, and communication plan for any scenario.
